ABOUT CONISTON

Coniston is a beautiful area with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains, with much to enjoy on the doorstep. The village is a welcoming, friendly place with a Co-op, grocer and excellent butcher, garage, petrol station, the Ruskin museum, a number of inviting coffee shops and restaurants, and some well known pubs.

Also owners of Bluebird Tours, we have vast knowledge and experience of the Lake District which we love the opportunity to share. We will be pleased to help with information and advice during your stay.

EXPLORING THE AREA

Beyond the immediate area of Coniston, the whole of the Lake District, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, awaits you.

How Head Cottages are ideally placed to explore and enjoy the immediate surroundings, and the rest of the beautiful Lake District.

There are many local walks to discover, with tracks to Tarn Hows, through Grizedale Forest, around the lake and into Coniston. Other attractions are a lake ride on the Gondola, exploring Brantwood House and café, or enjoying a relaxing coffee at the Bluebird Café across the water. This is Beatrix Potter country so a visit to Sawrey and Hill Top or the nearby village of Hawkshead could make a pleasant day out. Further afield are Elterwater, the Langdales and the Three Shires pub.

The lovely village of Hawkshead is just 3 miles over the hill. Cross Windermere lake with the ferry service to visit the towns of Bowness and Windermere for shopping and local tourist attractions.

The Langdale valleys lie a short distance to the north and beyond is Ambleside, Grasmere and the North Lakes.

Go west to savour the delights of the Wrynose and Hardknott Passes, dropping into Eskdale and on into Wasdale, even as far as Muncaster, Ravenglass and St Bees Head.

To the south, beyond Coniston Water, the Furness and Cartmel Peninsulas hold a wealth of lesser known attractions, Cartmel Priory, Furness Abbey, some lovely, unspoilt coastline, market towns and nature reserves among them.

To explore the area further contact Bluebird Tours, offering private hire for tours, transfers, corporate and special occasions.
